About Us

The Edinburgh Finance Society (EFS) is the leading student-led society at the University of Edinburgh focused on Investment Banking and Private Equity. EFS was formed in 2025 through the merger of two of Edinburgh’s most established and successful finance societies, the Investment Banking Club (IBC) and the Accounting and Finance Society (AFS), with the aim of combining the strengths and legacies of both to offer the most comprehensive platform for students interested in finance. Our mission is to equip our members with the technical knowledge, industry insights, and professional network necessary to succeed in these highly competitive fields. Throughout the academic year, we organise a range of events designed to support our members’ professional development, including weekly technical sessions, fireside chats & speaker events, M&A discussion groups and an M&A case competition. We welcome students from all degree backgrounds and years who are looking to develop their skills, meet like-minded peers, and build a network within the finance industry.

What We Do

Technical Training

Each week, we run focused training sessions aimed at supporting students throughout their recruitment journey and beyond. In the first semester, sessions cover topics such as CV reviews, application strategies, interview preparation, and assessment centre insights to help members in navigating internship and graduate recruitment cycles. In the second semester, we shift our focus to technical development, offering workshops on financial modelling, valuation techniques, and accounting fundamentals, ensuring that members are well-prepared for the practical demands of roles in Investment Banking and Private Equity.

Fireside Chats and Speaker Events

Throughout the year, we host industry professionals who share their career journeys, sector insights, and advice on how to break into competitive finance roles. This year alone, we welcomed speakers from firms such as J.P. Morgan, Goldman Sachs, Evercore, Rothschild & Co, Moelis & Co, Centerview, Societe Generale, Advent, Cinven, and Oaktree, giving our members the opportunity to hear first-hand career insights from some of the most respected names in the industry.

Competitions and Initiatives

Each year, we organise our M&A Case Competition, where students develop acquisition pitches through industry research, company analysis, and financial valuation. It is a hands-on opportunity to experience the deal-making process in a dynamic team environment, reflecting real-world M&A scenarios. We also run regular M&A Discussion Groups, which are informal, student-led sessions that offer a space to explore recent deals, exchange perspectives, and discuss key market developments in a relaxed and collaborative setting.

Networking and Community

Beyond technical learning and professional development, we are committed to building a strong, supportive, and welcoming community. We host regular socials and networking events throughout the year to give our members the chance to connect with like-minded peers, share experiences, and build lasting friendships.
